As MPAACT Puts It: Everybody has a plan, and Day is no exception. He has a plan for his baby brother Brian. Trouble is – Brian is off plan. He’s taking a break from college and picking up the family business, stripping the Roseland community to the bone. This decaying community is being pillaged by its own inhabitants, its politicians, and its few remaining businesses. As Day and Brian work to find their place in a community that is literally being picked clean, they struggle to come to grips with whether they are hastening the process, or part of the restoration.

TTS Alumni Included: Rich Oliver (MFA Acting 2023).

MPAACT is a multidisciplinary theatre arts organization dedicated to producing original works by the nation’s finest theatre artisits. Based in Chicago since 1991, MPAACT has built a reputation for innovation and excellence by solely producing world premiere productions which utilize language, music, and movement in a manner that captivates both the critical and commercial audience. The style of production has been labeled Afrikan Centered Theatre.

As Trap Door Theatre put it: Olwen Wymark’s splendid dramatization of Zola’s Nana is a story of sexual and financial greed in nineteenth-century Parisian society, depicting the rise and tragic downfall of a young courtesan.

Trap Door Theatre is committed to seeking out challenging and obscure works. Whether a forgotten European classic, an international project rarely seen in the United States, or an untarnished piece of American literature, Trap Door seeks diverse voices and presents them through innovative expression. We mix established and imaginative techniques to illustrate the absurdities of living in today’s society.

As Court Theatre Puts It: Everyone dies, but not everyone’s death is pre-ordained by Shakespeare. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead puts the spotlight on two of Shakespeare’s minor characters as they wrestle with fundamental, pressing questions of identity, loss, fate, friendship, and the absurdity of existence. As they hurtle towards their imminent demise, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern unlock what it means to be truly alive.

As Remy Bumppo puts it: Beane has always been different. When Beane falls madly in love with Molly, Beane’s world suddenly expands, and the seismic shift forces all of them to reexamine their own relationships and discover new facets of human connection. An off-kilter romantic comedy, Love Song by John Kolvenbach is a quick-witted exploration of the countless complexities of love and the endless capacity of the heart.

Intimate Apparel W/ Tracey N. Bonner

Two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning author Lynn Nottage’s play “Intimate Apparel” tells the story of a 1905 successful African American seamstress who makes revolutionary undergarments for an array of women – from high-society socialites to enterprising ladies of the night.

Her business, innovative skills, and utter discretion are much in demand, but at 35, her personal life has taken a backseat. “Intimate Apparel” explores her forbidden relationships with an Orthodox Jewish fabric vendor, her privileged and struggling clientele, and a long-distance suitor who will profoundly change her life.

TTS Alumni/ Current Students Included in the Arizona Theatre Companies Production Include: Tracey N. Bonner (MFA 04′ Alumni) Portraying the role of Esther.

The Production runs from: 2/16/24 – 3/3/2024.

THE MATCHBOX MAGIC FLUTE

In her acclaimed signature style, Mary Zimmerman conceives a brand new theatrical adaptation of Mozart’s beloved opera. Playful and imaginative, it’s big music in a small space. This “matchbox” presentation of The Matchbox Magic Flute features a cast of 10 and orchestra of five—following the fantastic adventures of Prince Tamino and Princess Pamina. With dragons, a man who is a bird, trials by fire and water and underground corridors, Day and Night do battle.

Eight-time Grammy Award-winning bassist, bandleader and host of NPR’s “Jazz Night in America,” Christian McBride brings his monumental musical tribute inspired by the words of Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr., Muhammad Ali and President Barack Obama. “When the suite soars, it follows the bandleader’s strengths, known for his ebullient precision — his joy in the details — and for savoring the nectar inside swing rhythm” (DownBeat). The Movement: Revisited is a one night performance on Feb. 2nd at The Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s Symphony Center.

I “Can’t Pay?” And “Won’t Pay!”

Can’t Pay Won’t Pay by Dario Fo, follows Antonia and Margherita, two working-class Italian women who decide to take matters into their own hands, and participate in a female-led riot where they steal from the supermarket as a response to a raise in prices. This two-act political farse follows the two women as they try to hide their crime before being caught by their husbands or the police. Gwydion’s version of this classic is a world-premiere translation.
