SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT REFLECTS ON HIS COLLEGE JOURNEY

Strobel honors student Matthew Szleszynski

Matthew Szleszynski, Strobel honors student, is a recent recipient of scholarship funds and is a prime example of how L&Q can have a positive impact on someone’s life. As a first-generation student, Szleszynski realized that DePaul was a perfect fit early in his application process.

“What set DePaul apart from other schools was the Strobel scholarship interview process,” says Szleszynski. “I came in for an interview with L&Q members and faculty. It was an incredible experience as an 18-year-old speaking with professionals in the industry. I learned the importance of the profession and realized the opportunities at DePaul.”

The Ledger & Quill Endowed Scholarship and Strobel Honors program were the deciding factors in Szleszynski’s decision to attend DePaul. His father is a small-business owner and instilled in him the value of time and money. The scholarship made his college decision easier. Szleszynski blossomed at DePaul, and with the financial burden of attending higher education a lot lighter, he was able to focus on his work and even pursued a second major in finance.

“I have an entrepreneurial spirit that goes into everything,” says Szleszynski. “If you want to work in any business, accounting is the skeleton of everything. You can be talented in marketing and creative, but you might not know how business is run. DePaul has given me the foundation for a successful career in business.”

Szleszynski had an internship at PwC in the summer of 2017. He plans on taking the CPA exam after graduation, working in the industry for a few years and eventually starting his own company. He is following in the footsteps of his entrepreneurial father, beginning with his college education.
