Now available to download: Vincentian Studies 39:1

The DePaul University Vincentian Studies Institute is pleased to release our newest free-to-download edition of Vincentian Studies, Volume 39, Number 1.

In honor of last year’s 400th anniversary of the Congregation of the Mission, the VSI is debuting a new, slightly revised name for our journal and a newly redesigned website. Beginning with volume 39, Vincentian Heritage will now be titled Vincentian Studies. This change is meant to better reflect the journal’s origins and our goal of welcoming articles across a wider array of subjects and scholarly areas. Our redesigned online home features a new landing page with a fresh look and site additions, while retaining our searchable repository of every issue and article published over our 46-year history.

Considering the importance of the 400th anniversary, we are pleased to reveal that our debut issue pays tribute to the career and scholarship of the Rev. John E. Rybolt, C.M. A celebrated Vincentian historian and author, Fr. Rybolt has been a member of the VSI from its start and has published numerous articles and books that have come to define our understanding of the history of the Vincentian family, including his major contribution to the remarkable The Vincentians: A General History of the Congregation of the Mission.

Volume 39, Number 1 features an introductory tribute authored by Setonian scholar Sr. Betty Ann McNeil, D.C., along with six new previously unpublished works written by Fr. Rybolt. As reflects Fr. Rybolt’s varied interests, these articles cover everything from Vincent de Paul’s armchair, to his attempts at reform, to the ties between the French revolutionary civic oath and Saint-Lazare, to Felix de Andreis, to the journey Vincentian missioners undertook to North America, to an annotated translation of Louis William DuBourg’s fascinating 1820 manuscript on the state of the mission in Louisiana.
