Shailja Sharma

Professor and Chair International Studies, Refugee and Forced Migration Studies, Global Asian Studies, Islamic World Studies

Shailja Sharma is a Professor of International Studies and former founding Director of the program in Refugee and Forced Migration Studies at DePaul University. Her research has focused on different aspects of migration: diasporas, citizenship, and forced migration. She is especially interested in migration from South Asia and its history of forced migration. She has written academic studies of the South Asian diaspora. She gave a TEDx talk on forced migration and frequently writes op-eds for publications like The Hill, Newsday, The Chicago Tribune, US News and World Report, and has appeared on media outlets like ABC and NBC to speak about migration.

DePaul Migration Advocates

The DePaul Migration Advocates, a collaboration between the Colleges of Law (CoL) and Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS), highlights DePaul’s legacy as an immigrant-serving institution through the work and impact of its alumni in migration, immigration, and human rights. Their contributions are showcased on DePaul’s website and other platforms
