Exiting Your Internship

If you are resigning:

If you need to quit your internship for any reason, do so respectfully and with adequate notice to your employer. Set up a time to meet with your employer and hand-deliver your resignation letter, express your gratitude for the internship opportunity and ask for a letter of recommendation if you had a generally positive experience at the organization. Also, ask your supervisor and colleagues for feedback that you can apply in the future. If possible, you should do this at least two weeks before you intend to leave your position. Be gracious and professional throughout this process and refrain from making complaints or expressing negative personal feelings.

Resigning before the intended end date may impact your ability to receive academic credit for your internship. If you need to resign early from an internship tied to academic credit, please reach out to Michael Elias at melias@depaul.edu to discuss your options.

If the internship period is ending:

If your internship period ends without a full-time job offer from your employer, make the most of the exit process. Try to finish strong in the last few weeks and days instead of giving in to burnout. Write a thank-you note to your supervisor and let them know you’d like to stay in touch; this is a great opportunity for networking and potentially securing a job offer from the organization later. Also, ask for feedback that you can bring with you into your next employment opportunities.
