Unarmed Truth and Unconditional Love

By Martin Luther King, Jr.

“I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality… I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word.”

Martin Luther King, Jr. was an American Baptist minister and activist, one of the most prominent leaders in the civil rights movement.

Inter-related Reality

By Martin Luther King, Jr.

“Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be, and you can never be what you ought to be until I am what I ought to be… This is the inter-related structure of reality.”

Martin Luther King, Jr. was an American Baptist minister and activist, one of the most prominent leaders in the civil rights movement.

Stop Being a Pleaser

From The Inner Voice of Love: Doubleday, Henri Nouwen

“You have to let your father and mother [and parent] figures go. You must stop seeing yourself through their eyes and trying to make them proud of you.

For as long as you can remember, you have been a pleaser, depending on others to give you an identity. You need not look at that only in a negative way.  You wanted to give your heart to others, and you did so quickly and easily. But now you are being asked to let go of all these self-made props and trust that God is enough for you. You must stop being a pleaser and reclaim your identity as a free self.”

Henri Nouwen was a Catholic priest, writer, and theologian.
