Community Flags

What you need:

  • Paper
  • Writing utensils (pens, colored pencils, crayons… etc)

Purpose: In this activity, participants will each create their own “flag.” This flag will represent each person’s identity and help to illustrate their values. They can include symbols, pictures, favorite foods, hobbies, skillsets, family, friends, religion/spirituality, etc. The idea behind this icebreaker is to show pride in our identities and to open up so we can share a part of ourselves with the group.

Activity: Hand out a sheet of paper to everyone present and then invite participants to use provided markers or crayons to help construct their own personal flag. Creativity is strongly encouraged! Give participants roughly 15 minutes or so to complete the flag. Encourage everyone to spread out and find a comfortable location to create their flag.

Once enough time has passed, bring the group back together and allow each participant a few minutes to share their creations with the group. Depending on size of group or time sharing can be done in small groups or with entire group.
