P.I.E.S: Share how you are feeling Physically, Intellectually, Emotionally, and Spiritually/Socially.
Rose, Thorn, Bud: Reflect upon the day: What went well (the “rose”), what didn’t go well (the “thorn”), and what are you looking forward to (the “bud”)?
Highs/Lows: Name the highs and the lows from the day. (In Ignatian spirituality: Where did you feel consolation and where did you feel desolation?)
Save or Savor: What is something you will take with you to work on/reflect on later? What insight will you savor now?
The 3 W’s: Wow, Wonder, Whine

The three W’s is a technique that often works well as a means of starting the reflection. They give participants a chance to look back at the day, share their highs and lows, and ask questions they have come up with.
- Wow: A “wow” is a high of the day. It can be somebody you met, something you saw, or something that you did. It is usually what had the greatest impact on you as look back on your day.
- Wonder: A ‘wonder’ can help you gauge what kind of questions the group is asking and can help to introduce social analysis into reflection. The wonder is often a jumping off point for
deeper discussion/reflection. Wonders should be questions that seek deeper understanding for something experienced, seen, or heard throughout the day. - Whine: Everybody has complaints, and sometimes we want to share those complaints with others. Your whine is that chance. It is your opportunity to voice a complaint and then move on from it. Because everyone knows they will have a chance later in the day to whine, complaints can be kept to a minimum during the day. (A possible positive twist is ‘why,’ ‘wonder,’
‘weird,’ getting participants to discuss something that struck them but was not necessarily negative.)
One Sentence, 3 Words, 1 Word, Silence: Go around and invite each participant to share first one sentence about the day or how they are feeling, then 3 words, then 1 word and end in silence.
One Word: Say one word about how you are feeling at this moment. (This is good to use as a check-in at the beginning and end of reflections.)
Weather Check: What kind of weather are you right now? (This gives a pulse on how the group is doing).
