K’Winece Ray

In her role as a Human Resources intern at The Borgen Project, K’Winece Ray had multiple responsibilities to support the department including updating job postings, sharing internship opportunities with students, and showcasing the goals of the organization on social media.
K’Winece applied to this internship after searching for psychology-related opportunities on Indeed and underwent, what she says was, an unexpected interview process.
“I had to take what was called a “candidate quiz” which was done to test my knowledge of the organization,” she says. “Following this I had an interview with an employee which went very well and they offered me the internship on the spot.”

While this internship taught K’Winece more about Human Resources than psychology, she has learned that HR is the backbone of a company.
“It was refreshing to have an opportunity to apply what I’ve learned in class and see it in action in this internship,” K’Winece says. “Ultimately, it made me hungry for more internship opportunities.”

“Something I looked for in my current internship opportunity were the mission, vision, and values of the organization. I found it extremely important to find an organization that I aligned more closely with so that I would be putting my best foot forward at all times.”

K’Winece’s internship with The Borgen Project was luckily unaffected by the COVID-19 pandemic as the company’s internship has always been offered with a remote option because they host interns from around the world.
“With this being my first remote job, I would say it definitely took some getting used to, but the team was very supportive, which made it easier to adjust,” K’Winece says.
Since this internship was unpaid, K’Winece was able to apply for and receive the Career Center’s Internship Plus award to provide financial support for her.
K’Winece enjoyed the experience she got from this internship but has realized that, in the future, she would like to find  a more hands-on role at an organization whose mission she personally connects with.
“Something I looked for in my current internship opportunity were the mission, vision, and values of the organization,” she says. “I found it extremely important to find an organization that I aligned more closely with so that I would be putting my best foot forward at all times.”
Since finishing her internship at The Borgen Project, K’Winece has started a year-long internship at Robert Bosch Tool Corporation, which she feels is a great fit for her, personally.
“My team is great and I am gaining such great experience in the field,” K’Winece says. “I’ll be ready to fly once this internship is done—although I hope it never ends.”
