Based on the data collected from FEMA, about the flooding around Chicago along the coast of Lake Michigan, shows that most of the coast is under the “VE” classification. These zones are high hazard zones. Structural damage can be due to high wave levels as well as high wind levels. These areas have about a 1% chance of annual flooding. We also see a lot of zones classified as AE these areas have a lot of people compared to other areas, and they are in a flood zone. Inland we see areas (AH) that are suspect to shallow flooding under 3 ft as well as areas (AO) that see a sheet flow of flooding at about 200 cubic feet per second.
