Gyms might be closed, but your workout routine doesn’t have to stop there. My brother is into heavy lifting and he even made his at-home gym with some cinder blocks, bags of rocks, and propane tanks. I’ll admit, I was too lazy to start my own home workouts for a while too until I found a few pilates videos online.
Not going to the gym right now might make some feel like they can workout and just hop back into bed or take a shower and call it a day. But refueling after is just as important as refueling before. Just because we’re all at home doesn’t mean that you can blow off your normal routine cool down and recovery period.
Here are some of my favorite things to help me refuel after a workout:
- Protein shake: This is my absolute favorite. I like to add frozen berries and almond milk to make it a smoothie. Whether you like whey, pea protein, soy protein, or anything else – you can’t go wrong with a protein shake or smoothie.
- A snack or meal: Sometimes I’m not hungry when I first wake up. If I force myself to eat, I’ll just feel sick. During these social distancing weeks (almost months, eek) I haven’t really been as hungry as usual. I think that’s because my schedule isn’t as busy as it normally is. A normal day in life for me would be working from 9 to 5, gym, then back to my apartment to do homework. I’d get very hungry during those hours because I had more things to do. Now, I’ll sometimes eat two full meals with some snacks. Anyways, having a light snack or meal after your workout is important. You don’t need to make a whole meal, but something like a protein-packed yogurt or some toast with peanut butter could help.
- Water: This one seems obvious, but many people don’t drink enough water. Get your water in so you don’t dehydrate!
