Our Alumni feature post this month highlights 2013 graduate, Carolyn Morris. Carolyn grew up in the Chicago suburb of Lake Forest and eventually made her way to DePaul. At DePaul, Carolyn first started undergraduate as a Graphic Design major, but ultimately decided Finance was what she was really interested in. During Carolyn’s time at DePaul, she volunteered as a DePaul Ambassador, which ended up being a great help to her in establishing good public speaking skills since she was consistently communicating with parents and students.
Since 2018, Carolyn has been working for Earnest Inc. Part of Carolyn’s role at Earnest is helping people with financial literacy. Carolyn also develops and oversees the content and community strategy at Earnest, where her team creates and distributes financial literacy for students taking on loans to pay for college and repayment strategies after graduation. Carolyn finds financial advising for young adults very rewarding and believes this guidance is so important for young people to understand, and wishes that someone with similar tools and materials had been there when she was starting college. Prior to her work at Earnest, she worked as a Senior Editor at Seeking Alpha, where she managed the ETF and Financial Institutions content operations.
During her time at DePaul, Carolyn attributes the Financial Analytics course for being the class that most prepared her for real-world situations. The course helped her realize the importance of being able to recognize and analyze financial statements, and parsing the important takeaways out of the noise. For anyone studying or pursuing finance, Carolyn definitely recommends to start looking for internships as early as possible. The more exposure one has before graduation, the better. Carolyn also suggests making yourself as memorable as possible in an interview, by asking good questions and doing your research!
We wish you the best of luck, Carolyn!
