Visit Shedd Aquarium
The Shedd Aquarium is one of Chicago’s top attractions and a perfect spot to dive into the city’s vibrant culture. It’s one of my favorite places to go when I have some free time!
Perched on the shores of Lake Michigan, this iconic aquarium is home to over 32,000 animals representing aquatic habitats from around the globe. Whether you’re fascinated by the colorful fish of the Caribbean Reef, the playful antics of the sea otters, or the serene grace of the beluga whales, there’s something here for everyone. My personal favorite area is the penguin exhibit, they’re so silly! There are also some new exhibits that will be opening in the near future that I’d love to see.
But the Shedd is more than just an aquarium—it’s also a leader in marine conservation. The Shedd’s team is dedicated to protecting ocean life, with efforts ranging from rescuing and rehabilitating endangered sea turtles to conducting research on coral reef health. They’re also heavily involved in public education, spreading awareness about the importance of preserving our oceans and the creatures that inhabit them!
Getting to the Shedd from DePaul’s Lincoln Park campus is super easy. Just hop on the Red Line at Fullerton to Roosevelt and take about a 15 minute walk to the aquarium (you can also take the 146 bus). The aquarium is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours on weekends. The best times to go are early morning and about an hour before closing. Make sure to visit the gift shop and cafe at the end!
While general admission ranges from $39.95 to $49.95, you’re in luck as a DePaul student—you can visit for free by reserving your ticket online during Chicago Resident Free Days, where you can explore the aquarium without spending a cent. It’s a great way to make the most of your time in the city while supporting a great cause!
I hope you can visit in the near future and hope you love it as much as I do!
