5 Reasons Why “Work-Study” Can Work For You

Wondering how you can make money as a DePaul student without worrying about getting distracted from your studies by having a full-time job? Have you wondered what exactly a “federal work-study” grant is? For starters, when you get hired as a student worker in a department here at DePaul, you’re offered a federal work-study grant, which is structured like a typical job. The idea is that your paychecks would ideally go toward your tuition to help lessen the financial burden. It could also be great for some after-class boba (remember to be financially responsible), and that is also perfectly fine! Below are five more reasons why it could work for you and be a great learning opportunity.
1. On-Campus Locations
I’m currently working as a Strategic Communications Assistant in the Communications Department this quarter, and it’s been an incredibly exciting opportunity!
Based at the Loop campus, the role gives me hands-on experience in Strategic communications, even though I’m not a PR or Advertising major. With a packed schedule, the on-campus location for this role is a huge advantage. Luckily, student employment positions offer a variety of positions that are typically at either the Loop or Lincoln Park campuses (some roles are located at Cinespace studios which is also very cool!).

2. Hands-On Experience
Building your resume, gaining experience, and working with people in a field you’re interested in becomes easier through a student employment role.
These roles offer flexibility and the chance to dive deeper, knowing DePaul faculty, staff, and co-workers are there to support your growth along the way. Don’t hesitate to ask questions, share suggestions, and stay open to new perspectives. You’ll learn something new every day if you’re willing!
3. Sustainable Pay
Working is great, but what about the pay? Student Employment opportunities provide adequate pay along with access to resources that support you throughout your role. You can learn and still buy yourself delicious treats as you work towards graduation!
You’ll find that supervisors and staff are very willing to share knowledge, tips, and mentorship, making it perfect for students who need a source of income without sacrificing their focus on their studies. If you’re financially responsible you can save, enjoy treats, and still cover any school materials you might need (or forgot to order…no shame).

4. Variety of Options
From roles like Digital Media Assistant to Genius Squad Technology Support and even Dean’s Office Assistant, the range of opportunities are vast and help prepare you for post-graduation employment. Keeping an updated resume and refining cover letter writing skills provides a sense of investment with each position you apply for. Even if you don’t secure a role, you can feel safe seeking feedback from employers (DePaul Faculty, Staff, or Professors) to strengthen your candidacy for future applications. They’re here to help!

5. Deepen Your DePaul Roots
Being a ‘Blue Demon’ can feel distant as a first-year or transfer student, which is why the Quarter Program, Immersion Week, and other activities are crucial.
Through these programs, students experience DePaul in a more engaging way, broadening their comfort zones and embracing new experiences. One of these efforts is Student Employment, which allows students to gain independence (especially important if you’re away from home), feel invested in meaningful work, and grow professionally while establishing deeper connections at DePaul.
