Tips for Getting Around Chicago

As a DePaul student, Chicago is an integral part of the experience. Getting around Chicago can be a little challenging and confusing at points. I know I was definitely a little nervous about getting around and not getting lost when I first started school, but I have some suggestions on ways to ease traveling.
1. Google Maps
Google Maps is my absolute bestie. Google Maps does a great job. Not only does it tell you CTA information like which “L” line to take, but it also estimates when it will arrive. While the times aren’t perfect they really do help. Also with Google Maps live tracking it helps to know if you are even walking in the right direction.

2. Know where you’re going
Another important tip is to know where you’re going. I suggest looking up your route beforehand and finding a landmark or two. Then when I use Google Maps when I am actually going I have an idea if I am heading in the right direction.
3. Ventra Card
The next big thing is to make sure you have your Ventra card. The school provides a card with unlimited rides during the quarter. I make sure that my card is attached to my keys so I always have it with me. It’s not a huge deal if you do forget because you can always buy a throwaway pass.

4. Ventra App
Now if you’re feeling adventurous you can always visit the suburbs. The easiest way is to take the Metra. The best way to get tickets is through the Ventra app. The app is amazing because it also work with CTA and allows you to view your Ventra card, load money onto it, and much more. The app is great because it gives times for the Metra train, too.
5. Pay attention
My next piece of advice is to pay attention when walking around. I try not to text while walking, and instead am always taking in my surroundings. If I’m not paying attention it gets very easy to bump into someone or a light pole.

6. Share Location
Lastly I do always like to have my location shared with my parents and/or friends. I use Find My, but there are so many apps out there. I also check in with people before I leave and when I get back. It is a good habit to get into and you can just share with one person.
I absolutely love going to school in Chicago. There is always so much going on from the food, museums and markets–there is never a dull moment. Chicago can seem big and busy at points, but I found staying calm and just doing a little planning makes it worth it.
