Staying in Touch with College Friends

Staying in touch with people once the school year ends can be a little challenging. People are returning home and may have even graduated. But that doesn’t mean the friendships have to stop. I have some tips on how to keep connected throughout summer.

1. Get their phone number

It might seem a little awkward to ask, but make sure you have their phone number so you can call or text. While having a Snap or Instagram is nice too, having a phone number is the best. Sometimes Instagram gets deleted or people just don’t check their socials. A phone number is the best way of staying connected.

2. Pick up the phone

The best thing about having a cell phone is that we are able to communicate with each other. I’m all for texting my friends, but texting is really great primarily for the little things. For example, cute puppy photos or garden updates. When we actually call each other to see how we are doing, it is so much nicer. Hearing the other person’s voice and emotions are way better than an emoji. Calling each other allows us to even still have lunch chats, just over the phone instead!

3. Activities

Plan a fun group activity. This could be pottery painting, a movie night, or visiting the Lincoln Park Zoo. It offers a little structure and with some planning can be very fun. There is so much to choose from in the city and outside of it.

4. Catch-Up Coffee Breaks

For friends who are around the area, I try to plan coffee chats. We find a cute cafe downtown, like Beatrix or Goddess and meet up to catch up. This can be as frequent as you like, but nothing beats an in-person chat.

5. Road trips

For that long distance bestie, plan a road trip. I have a friend who lives a couple hours away and we try to find a place to meet in the middle. Then the drive is not so bad and you still get to see each other. Or switch off visiting each other in your hometown so you can show each other your favorite spots.

The most important thing is don’t panic, even if there is a little lull over the summer. Everyone is recharging and settling back into a summer routine. People may have internships, jobs, vacations, and so much more. It never hurts though to reach out and check in with people!
