Sophmore Year Relfections

As I just finished my sophomore year at DePaul, I definitely wanted to look back on my year. Everyone says college goes by in the blink of an eye and it is definitely true. After 2 years, I definitely have gotten the hang of being a college student and have a couple of suggestions.

As DePaul students we have 10 week quarters. This means classes move fast. It still gets me every time, even after 2 years of it. I really started relying on my agenda to keep track of things, because otherwise you’re guessing what week it is. Springtime seems to always go by the fastest. With friends graduating, summer weather and internships there is so much to do. I try to always put at least one more relaxed class in my spring schedule. I found this really helps, this class can be a gen ed that really interests you or an elective class.

Getting Involved

Throughout the last 2 years I have really pushed myself to do things, even if I don’t have a friend to go with. There is literally always something going on at DePaul. The Loop Life office is always hosting some sort of fun craft or game. I also suggest getting involved in academic activities too. As an entrepreneur student I try to participate in stuff hosted by the Coleman Center. They do expos, pitch competitions, and business workshops. At first I was nervous to apply to these things and didn’t in my first year. Sophomore year I went for it. I am so glad I did, as I had so much fun, gained experience and met other people.

The other thing I wish I would have started doing sooner is reaching out to people in class. Especially the more technical math-based ones. Having a friend or two to do homework with, ask questions, and even go to the tutors with is so beneficial.

I look forward to being an upperclassman next year. I think the biggest thing I have taken away since starting college is that I am my own person. I can try new things, go to new places, and meet new people. Going to DePaul has really shown me that each person can create their own path.
