Preparing for a Study Abroad Program

During my time at DePaul I have been accepted to two study abroad programs! The first program I completed the summer going into my Junior Year! I visited London and Edinburgh on the Harry Potter Fan Studies Study abroad trip. Now, during my senior year I have been accepted to a Media/Cinema studies in Rome program which I will attend after graduation for five weeks in Rome! Based on my experiences, here is how I recommend preparing to study abroad:

Firstly, you need to determine what you’re going to pack and what you’re going to buy at the location. For example, in many European airports you can only bring a quart size bag of liquids. So, I will be purchasing larger shampoo/conditioner, contact solution, and toothpaste while I’m there! Based on how long you will be abroad, you will have to decide how much product you need, and if travel sized items will be enough!

Next, you need to set a budget for yourself. It can be very easy to spend a ton of money very quickly during a study abroad because you’re living in the moment. You also must pay attention to the exchange rates in the country your visiting compared to American currency. I would recommend carrying some cash with you and utilizing a travel credit card to gain points on your purchases! There are also plenty of free and fun things to do abroad! Do some research on ways to save money in the place you’ll be exploring!

Another tip I have is to plan your excursions ahead of time that are outside of the program. You are likely to have free days on yout trip and often booking your activities ahead of time can save you money, a headache, and the struggle of things being sold out! If you’re planning on using your free time to travel to another country or city, definitely make sure you begin planning before you even leave for your trip!

Overall, my biggest piece of advice is to plan, plan, plan! If you need advice, ask your professors, the study abroad office, student ambassadors, or alumni of your program! These people are more than willing to help you plan for your exciting trip abroad!
