Navy Pier Fireworks! -xoTani

“NAVY PIER, fireworkes -хоТаni”

This is how I learned my lesson that the fireworks start very punctually, and I need to be there before time next time around. This is why I decided to reach Navy Pier at 9:30 pm itself the next Saturday. Its pier is absolutely packed for these shows, and it can be hard to find a spot to enjoy the fireworks even if you are early. Thankfully, my boyfriend and I were able to sit by a light pole and wait for a couple of minutes till it started.

Right in front of us, the sightseeing boat tour departed to go further into the water in order to watch the fireworks from a closer view. It was adorable to see a line of such boats waiting for the show to start as well. At exactly 10 pm, there was an announcement about the commencement of the show, and then we heard it – the first boom! A beautiful purple flower, like a firework in the sky. Soon after, all the other fireworks followed in sequence, creating a wonderful palette of pinks, purples, greens and goldens. The audience was filled with “wows” and “ohs” and it was moving to see everyone concentrated on the sky.

We enjoyed this show so much that we decided to invite some of our other friends to next Wednesday’s show. Thankfully, we were there on time and were able to share this moment with more people we cared about! Overall, I enjoyed them a lot and would highly recommend that everyone who enjoys summers in Chicago definitely give the Navy Pier fireworks show a try!

One fun fact about me is how I LOVE fireworks. The way they brighten up the dark sky with vibrant colors and pretty sparkles which fall down delicately, what is there not to love about them! Being an Indian who was born on the day of Diwali (Festival of Lights), fireworks have been a part of my upbringing, and in a wholesome way remind me of my home. Additionally, it reminds me of the time when I used to watch the New Year’s fireworks show with my friends in Zurich over the serene water of Lake Zurich; it takes me straight to childhood as well. This is why I normally do not miss any fireworks shows whenever possible.

Unfortunately, I was unable to enjoy the Navy Pier fireworks last year, as I decided to go back home; however, this time around, I was excited to say the least. Summertime Navy Pier fireworks take place at 9 pm every Wednesday and 10 pm every Saturday. My first attempt was a little sad. I left my house half an hour early; however, the Red Line trains were very delayed and slow, as there was also a Cubs Game the same day. It seemed like right as I was trying to leave, the crowd was heading out too after the game ended. This caused tremendous delay, and I missed the fireworks :(.

Soon after the show was over, the space erupted in applause from us, grateful for the show the city gave us. The warmest thing of them all was how all the ships honked as well, showing appreciation from their end as well! Soon, the pier started to clear up as everyone was happy and ready to end their day in the city. As we walked to the nearest Red Line station, we saw how all the boats were returning from the water in a neat line in an orderly manner. It solidified the idea in my head that I absolutely should enjoy the fireworks next year from a boat.

The show reminded me heavily of the New Year’s Firework event, which took place in the city. I love feeling like one with the city. It amazes me just how many people there are residing in Chicago, and furthermore, it excites me that we all are able to enjoy moments like this together and share our amazement thanks to the fact that we live in a grand city like this!
