My Favourite Professors at DePaul 3/3 (Liberal Studies Program edition)

2. Jacob Friedman
I have taken three classes with Professor Friedman: LSP 112 Focal Point Seminar on Inhuman Agents: the Rhetoric of Algorithms, WRD 104 Composition and Rhetoric 2 and WRD 204 Technical Documentation. One skill I absolutely love about Professor Friedman is the precision and care he speaks with. He always has a unique point to convey and integrates interesting assignments, which I found fun to do. As a Data Science student at DePaul, I absorbed a lot of knowledge from Professor Friedman, which I am sure I will be utilising in the tech industry soon.
3. Rex Lewis
Professor Lewis’ LSP 200 Seminar on Race, Power and Resistance class, focusing on Environmental Worldviews, was a very well-structured class with a mix of theory, field trips, outside speakers and group assignments, which prepared us well for the final project. A trait about Professor Lewis I appreciated was how he always cared about what we students thought about the course and how we wanted him to further better it. It genuinely speaks to how he cares about our feedback to ensure that students at DePaul can take the most from this course and apply it in real life eventually.

DePaul offers its students the ability to pursue the Liberal Studies Program, which not only consists of the student’s major-specific classes, but also pushes them to take some additional mandatory classes such as Composition and Rhetoric. This allows students to take some electives in different domains such as science, art, history, etc.
Here is a short list of professors I enjoyed taking at DePaul University for my three-part series here on DeBlogs.
1. Joe Rice
One of the first classes I took at DePaul University was LSP 111, Explore Chicago: Restorative Justice class. Professor Rice’s class structure, values and the final takeaways are something that has shaped my outlook on Chicago as a whole and taught me how I should prioritise the community I am a part of. Read more about the class HERE. It is safe to say that this was one of the most impactful classes I have taken and a class that has taught me values which I think about often in my personal life.

I believe the Liberal Studies Program helps DePaul students understand the world they are a part of. With amazing major-specific courses which provide them with technical skills, the Liberal Studies Program gives them a motive to utilise those skills in areas where we need them the most. After all, the main big question every single DePaul student is asked when they first arrive here is “What must be done”, and I am sure that the blend of these courses is a step in the right direction to figure that solution out.
