My DePaul Class Highlight: Women in Entrepreneurship
Out of the classes I took this quarter my favorite was my Women in Entrepreneurship class. This class focused on not only women entrepreneurs, but women in leadership roles in existing companies too. We discussed the issues and disparity women face in the startup community and also the successes and resources they have. As a woman entrepreneur student I found this class to be so insightful and have gathered so much insight. It is taught by the amazing professor Emily Doyle. She is encouraging and always willing to meet with students, which makes the class amazing.
We heard from a wide range of women who owned start-ups, all at different stages. Some have had their business for only a year or two, while others have been doing it for 10 years. We got to hear their personal stories on what it took for them to start their businesses. I found it inspiring to hear about the challenges they faced and overcame. We also had time to ask questions and chat with them after class. I personally really like this, as it allows you to get a little one on one time. This has also allowed me to expand my network to include many strong women entrepreneurs.
Another inspiring aspect of this class was visiting some coworking spaces that DePaul has membership at. We even took a class field trip, which I was super excited for. We visited TechNexus located inside the Lyric Opera House. This was a really cool place, and it’s free for DePaul students to use the common area. Also, there are so many businesses there that are open to talking to students and even mentoring! My favorite part though was the gorgeous rooftop. I was also happy because it is so close to Ogilvie Transportation Center which makes it an easy spot for me to get to. Additionally we got to visit 1871 in the Merchandise Mart which is also open to students. Furthermore I also enjoyed the tour of IRL at DePaul where we got an overview of all the things we could do there.
This class is an open elective and I suggest taking it. It really is open to anyone, not just business students or women. It gives an insight into the business world and what it is like to be a female in any corporate job. This is just one of the many awesome classes DePaul has to offer.
