Inside Look of being a Club President

A trifold display board for the DePaul CEO (Collegiate Entrepreneurship Organization) features information about speakers, competitions, networking events, and upcoming meetings.

This quarter has probably been my busiest yet, from classes, internships, and more. The newest addition is being president of a club. From late night emails, last minute pizza orders, and making sure events are engaging students, it can feel like a part time job. However I would not trade it for the world, and have so enjoyed being President of DePaul’s CEO club (aka the entrepreneurship club).

Sadly, the behind the scenes stuff is not as glamorous as the events and meetings we host. It is a lot of emailing, tracking down people and worrying. The best moment though is when it all comes together. The food arrives, the students start coming in, and the speaker lights up the room. I can then sit back, relax and engage in our meetings. It’s been fun getting to not only participate, but plan these events too.

A male speaker, Bob, stands at a podium draped with a spiderweb decoration and gestures toward two screens displaying his biography and the words "Who is Bob?" beneath a "Happy Halloween" banner.

The people really make it all worthwhile. Being a part of a club builds a community. It has been so great to see our club grow and new members join. I love getting to chat with everyone and see what ideas they have. A lot of my friends have come from this club, so getting to create that for other students is a full circle moment.

Another great part of running a club is all the skills you learn, like managing a team and event planning. I have also had to put myself out there a lot. Opportunities don’t just come out of thin air, you really have to work for them. So if we wanted a certain speaker, space, prizes, we had to go get them. I’m not saying you don’t have support, our advisor is amazing and so helpful, but you really have to stay on top of things if you want them.

I have to admit running a club is not for the faint of heart. A lot of work goes into having some instagram worthy events. It is so rewarding though as I have gotten to meet so many other passionate students. On top of this the connections and networking you make are so valuable. Being the President of a club is a lot of work, but also so rewarding.
