I worked on a film set for a weekend!

a film set

With a personal passion for makeup and fashion, I was inclined to take up the wardrobe for the entire cast. This was going to be my first time on a DePaul student set, and I was a mix of very excited and very nervous. Being a part of the Art Department meant that a lot of my planning had to stem from pre-production. I have not taken any classes on this particular skill and decided to simply go in blind. One thing was very obvious, however, I had to make sure my best friend and roommate’s movie would turn out great.

I started calculating how many outfits each character needed and then sent out messages to the cast asking for specific clothing articles they owned which matched the story we were trying to convey. After manually picking the most adequate clothes for each character, I created outfits and a checklist for each actor for every single day of the shoot, so they are clear on what to bring every day.

Overall, I am grateful to have been allowed to participate in a film production by my roommate and am excited to view the final cut of this story that I’ve seen on paper and helped get created.

One of the big reasons why DePaul University fascinated me to begin with was due to its being one of the best film schools nationwide. Not only does it provide with exciting and insightful courses which helps its Film and TV students thrive in any role they wish to pursue in a production, but it also offers classes right at CineSpace Chicago, allows film students to rent out industry level equipment to film with and unlike some film schools, does not try to own the film over the students who have actually created the film!

My roommate Judith is a Film and TV Student with a burning passion for Screenwriting and Film direction. With her brilliant skills, she wrote a wonderful short film which reflects some aspects of her unique Mallu Christian community, and is drenched with the awe of childhood innocence. When the time came to actually start planning to film this movie, I was clear from the start: I wanted to be a part of this production.

After all the big and important details, such as Camera, Sound and G&E were sorted out, the actual shooting weekend arrived. Filled with Actions and Cuts with several different camera angles, shots, 3 major sets, and 3 fast-paced days, the movie finally wrapped. It was awesome to see all these different departments and the cast work hard with dedication to move as a single team to create art. It was amazing to have been reminded why I love filmmaking as a whole and enjoyed every second of it by giving my best to help all cast members look their best, makeup, hair and fashion-wise on the big screen.

— One thing I must highlight is the great snacks and lunches that were provided on set for three days straight. Chips, bags, Capri Suns and lunch such as pasta and sandwiches were truly delicious and fueled everyone on set and ensured that no one was working on an empty stomach!!
