Students don’t pick out their college by themselves. That’s why we wanted to lay out our top ten tips for parents to help their students figure out what school is best for them. Go through these tips with your student and you’ll be ahead of the game!

1. Find the Right Fit

Do you want a big school or a small school? Encourage your student to think about class sizes, student-to-faculty ratios, and the overall campus community. Also, consider the location—urban exploration, suburban chill, or rural peace—what’s the right fit for your kid?

2. Find a School with a Mission that Resonates

Look for colleges that align with your teen’s values and passions. Whether it’s community service, sustainability, ethical business growth, or innovation, a school’s mission can be a powerful motivator for success.

3. Campus Vibes Matter

Encourage your teen to visit campuses (in person or virtually). The right “vibe” can make all the difference. A gut feeling is often more telling than glossy brochures.

4. Don’t Judge a School by Its Sticker Price

The listed tuition is just the starting point. Financial aid, scholarships, and grants can make schools more affordable and accessible. Explore all your options before ruling any school out!

5. Explore the Extras: Internships, Study Abroad, and More

Hands-on experience and global adventures can define a college experience. Check if the school offers strong internship programs and study abroad options that align with your teen’s interests.

6. Options for the Undecided

If your teen isn’t sure what they want to major in, look for universities with a wide range of programs. The more options available, the more room they’ll have to explore and discover their passion. And if a lot of those programs are top-ranked nationally, even better!

7. Extracurriculars and Support Services Are Key

College isn’t just about academics. Investigate clubs, sports, and other activities, as well as the school’s academic, career, and mental health support services. A well-rounded experience and strong support system can make all the difference.

8. Become a Well-Rounded Student

College is an opportunity to grow in every direction. Encourage your teen to explore new interests, take on leadership roles, and develop skills outside their major. Balance is key to a fulfilling college life.

9. Trust Your Teen (And Yourself)

They’ve got this! Trust their instincts, but also trust your own. You know them best—guide them, but let them lead the way.

10. Become a Well-Rounded Student

The college search is a big milestone. Celebrate the small victories—whether it’s narrowing down the list, submitting an application, or just surviving another campus tour. You’re both in this together!
