How I Balance College Life, an Internship, and More
Being a student is like working a full time job, from homework deadlines, to group projects and exams. Add in campus jobs and internships, and it can be very busy. As a junior business student, a social media intern, and blog writer (like this one), I definitely get it! But I wouldn’t trade it for anything. The opportunity to intern and work has taught me just as much as being a student. It makes college exciting, and I have found some ways to make sure nothing is missed or overlooked.
1. Be Present in Class
I know it is so easy to have your laptop open to take notes in class and then start working on something else. That’s why I prefer paper notes, because then I am putting the distraction away. I find when I’m in class, I want to be in class. Even though I’m sitting and listening during a lecture and could easily be multitasking, then nothing is getting my full effort. School is always my top priority. I treat class and school like a job and when I am here at DePaul, I’m giving my full attention to it.
2. Keep a Routine
I like to keep a routine to stay on top of things and it makes it easier as I don’t have to think of what to do next. Most days my morning commute is dedicated to readings for class and posting on socials for my internship. I keep my afternoons more focused on homework assignments and other more hands-on tasks. And my routine isn’t just for balancing school and work, it allows me to have built in time for relaxing or getting a workout in too.
3. Take a True Lunch Break
This has been one of the best things I have done, is giving myself time to have lunch, and not working at the same time. I am a multi-tasker to the bone, but giving myself even 15 minutes to eat lunch, scroll TikTok, or read a book has made me more productive. The brain break has made me more focused when I return to class or get back to a project.
4. Find some Natural Light
Something else that has really helped me is working in natural light. I try to find a spot that is bright and hopefully lets me see the outside world. DePaul has so many great spots for this. From the library with its big windows, to the outdoor patio at the Loop Campus. There are plenty of places to set up and get work done with lots of light. Plus the light always puts me in a much more productive mindset.
5. Talk to your Boss
An important part when applying for internships and jobs is finding a boss and company that fits you, values your time, and respects that you are still a student. I was lucky enough to find an internship that is super flexible. They want to make sure I am focusing on school and even like to hear about my classes! And the great thing about getting a campus job is that they definitely know you’re a student and really want you to succeed as a Blue Demon.
The biggest thing is to be in the moment and to be passionate about what you’re doing. It makes it so much easier to do. I love all of these jobs and my classes so it doesn’t feel like it is taking away from something else. DePaul offers so many opportunities to be more than a student and I say go for it.
