Hidden in Plain Sight the Wild Mile

A young woman with glasses and a fanny pack smiles while standing next to a black sign that says "Wild Mile" in white text.

Sun’s out, summer is in full swing, great weather, a little breeze, and trying to not go stir crazy inside the house. I found the perfect place to get some steps and fresh air. The Wild Mile, hidden behind REI, is definitely a little gem in the city.

Now I really lucked out and went on a day where it was 66 degrees and sunny. The flowers were in bloom, birds were chirping and there was even a butterfly. It’s not a long walk, only actually about 700ft, but is the perfect place to get out and enjoy a little nature. To get to it, you have to walk down the alley behind the REI, and it definitely feels like you are going the wrong way. But, you just have to keep going and then you are there!
A bright pink hibiscus flower with large green leaves is centered in the foreground, with a metal pedestrian bridge in the background.
A winding wooden boardwalk path curves through a lush, green trail filled with wildflowers under a cloudy blue sky.
A young woman with glasses and a pink water bottle sits on a unique, rustic wooden bench next to a waterway.
There are a lot of cool little aspects that make this trail special. There is a really unique sculpture made out of branches, that you can even sit on! Also, there are multiple places to sit and just enjoy the view with a coffee. The trail also includes some education bits, with signs talking about the wildlife you may or may not see. Still a little bummed I did not get to see a river otter!
The Wild Mile also does morning yoga, kayaking, and even boat tours up and down the river! I didn’t do any of these things this time, but plan to in the future for sure. I think it’s a great little hidden gem in the city with a lot of nature. It also gives you an up close and personal view of the Chicago River, I mean you are literally walking on top of it. So give the Wild Mile a go next time you’re in the Lincoln Park area.
