DePaul Student Summer Activities: Free Movies at Navy Pier

As a freshly graduated college student, I am always looking for ways to explore the city that don’t break my bank account. Summertime is the perfect time to take advantage of the countless free events throughout the city.  This week, I tried something new and went to Navy Pier to check out their free outdoor movie night.

This summer, Navy Pier is offering free outdoor movies for anyone to attend every Monday night.  This year, they chose a theme that all of the movies share, and this year, it is animals!  On July 17th, I went to the showing of Lion King.

My evening at Navy Pier started on the pier itself.  My roommate and I walked around all of the shops and stopped to take a look at the gorgeous view of the skyline that the space offers.  We then found ourselves enjoying a pre-movie snack and drink at Margaritaville, located on the pier.

Once we wrapped up our dinner, we headed over to the screen to secure our spot on the grass.  The screen was a great size, so there were no bad seats.  The positioning of the screen also offered more views of the iconic skyline and lake in the background.  Overall, it was a great atmosphere and one of my favorite free events I have attended so far this summer.

Other vendors throughout the city also offer similar events.  Millennium Park offers free movies and concerts, and Rooftop Cinema Club has a space where you can watch movies outside on the roof with wireless headphones. There’s so much to do in the summer!
