A Guide to Beating the Heat During Chicago Summers

Chicago summers can be scorching, but there’s no need to sweat it out. Here are eight Chicago-specific ways to cool down and enjoy the season.

1. Hit the Beach at Lake Michigan

I like to go to one of Chicago’s beautiful beaches like Oak Street Beach, North Avenue Beach, and Montrose Beach. You can swim in the refreshing waters of Lake Michigan, sunbathe on the sandy shores, or even rent a boat and split the price with your friends for some adventurous fun. When it’s too hot during the day, my friends and I wait until night time to go play volleyball, and the view of the skyline is unforgettable!

2. Take a River Cruise

Embark on an architectural boat tour along the Chicago River, starting from the Chicago Riverwalk. These river cruises offer stunning views of the city’s iconic skyline while providing a cool breeze as you glide along the water. It’s a relaxing and informative way to see the city’s architectural marvels while staying cool on a hot summer day. For a cheaper option, you can take a water taxi down to the Ping Tom Memorial Park and explore Chinatown!

3. Visit an Ice Cream Shop

Cool down with a visit to one of Chicago’s beloved ice cream shops like Margie’s Candies, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, or Original Rainbow Cone. These iconic spots are perfect for satisfying your sweet tooth while cooling off. Don’t forget that Jeni’s offers a 15% discount at all Chicago area shops to DePaul University students, faculty, and staff; just show your DePaul ID!

4. Explore the Art Institute of Chicago

Escape the heat and dive into a world of art at the Art Institute of Chicago. Located in Grant Park, this renowned museum houses an impressive collection of artworks spanning centuries and cultures. Wander through the air-conditioned galleries and discover masterpieces from artists like Monet, Van Gogh, and Seurat. It’s a cultural and cooling retreat that offers both inspiration and respite from the summer sun.

5. Catch a Movie at an Outdoor Theater

Enjoy a summer evening by watching a movie at one of Chicago’s outdoor cinemas, like Movies in the Parks hosted by the Chicago Park District or Movies at Gallagher Way in Wrigleyville. Bring a blanket and some snacks, and relax as you watch a classic film under the stars. While the sun sets and temperatures drop, it’s a perfect way to end a hot day in a cool, communal setting!

Enjoy these cool activities and make the most of your Chicago summer!
