5 Tips to Ace your Midterms

Midterms at DePaul University can feel daunting, especially since the quarter system moves quickly. However, with the right strategies, you can tackle your exams with confidence. Here are five key tips to help you succeed during midterms!

1. Create a Study Plan

Time management is critical, especially when midterms arrive fast in DePaul’s quarter system. Start by making a schedule that breaks down what material you’ll review each day leading up to the exams. Focus on the most challenging topics and give yourself enough time for all your courses. This way, you’ll avoid cramming the night before and feel more prepared.

2. Don’t Skip Breakfast

A nutritious breakfast is essential on exam day! Eating something like eggs, oatmeal, or a smoothie will give you the energy and focus you need to perform well. If you’re rushing, grab something quick like a fruit-and-yogurt parfait from the ETC on the second floor of the Student Center or a sandwich from The Bean (located in the SAC, the Ray, and McGowan South). A protein shake is my go-to. If you’re looking for something around campus, The Bagelers’ is one of my favorite places – I always get “The Gardener” and a strawberry lemonade. Avoid skipping breakfast or just having coffee on an empty stomach, it can leave you feeling really sluggish.

3. Utilize Campus Resources

DePaul offers many resources to help students excel during midterms. You can reserve a study room at the DePaul University Library for some focused review time. Visit this page and put in all of the information. Remember, you can only have one booking a day! Plus, you can take advantage of tutoring services available in subjects like math, writing, and science. If you prefer group study, form a study group with your friends or classmates to help each other better understand course materials.

4. Take Breaks and Stay Active

It’s important to take breaks while studying, and what better way to do that than heading to The Ray? Physical activity helps reduce stress and improves concentration. A quick workout or a walk around campus can recharge you mentally and physically, so you return to studying with fresh energy. I like to take a walk from the library to the Armitage stop and grab a coffee from La Colombe or Olor Coffee (right behind the St. Vincent DePaul Church). It’s such a beautiful walk, especially during the fall!

5. Prioritize Sleep and Mental Health

Don’t underestimate the power of a good night’s sleep. All-nighters may seem tempting, but lack of sleep can actually impair your memory and focus. Try to maintain a regular sleep schedule with at least 8 hours, especially during midterms week. Don’t hesitate to seek support if you’re feeling overwhelmed—DePaul’s Counseling Services is there to help!

By following these tips and using the resources DePaul offers, you’ll be well-prepared to tackle midterms and succeed. Good luck!
