A Business Student Takes on Archeology

I know what you’re thinking, oh boy. But as most of my fellow classmates in Archeology were business and film students, I think we may have all been on the same page of the best science class to take at DePaul. Every college has you take “gen eds” or better known as general education classes. These are things like literature, philosophy, history, and of course science. Luckily, I only had to get through one science class, plus a lab.
Now the reasoning behind choosing Introduction to Archeology was that it sounded cool and fit into my schedule. That is usually my method for choosing gen ed classes. You want to do something that interests or inspires you, otherwise it will be a long 10 weeks. And why not Archeology. I mean digging in dirt, learning about excavation techniques, and looking at human bones, not dinosaurs, that’s paleontology, sounds fun right?

It really was a fun class! This is a hands-on class, with a short lecture and then time to apply what we learned in the lab. I thought this was so cool! First off, Dr. Smith was a great professor. She was always connecting the topics back to her own field work she did in the Philippines. And in our lab we were digging on fake sites, surveying the quad, and much more. As I’m already a Junior a lot of my day consists of creating business plans, finance terms, and reading case studies. So having a different topic class that involved getting our hands dirty, quite literally was a great change up of routine. Our final project was the best as we got to unearth a whole skeleton and artifacts and then piece together this person’s story.
This is what makes gen eds so cool is that they aren’t something you might have normally have taken. And you actually can end up connecting things back to your major related classes. I thoroughly enjoyed taking on the world of Archaeology for a quarter. It’s not everyday you get to dig up a site!
