Blue Demon Approved:
Spring Things for College Students
at DePaul University
Spring is finally peeking through in Chicago, which means it’s time to shake off the winter blues and enjoy the city in full bloom! Whether you’re looking for a peaceful park, cool street fests, or budget-friendly options, there’s something for everyone—in the loop and in Lincoln Park!
Outdoor Parks & Activities (Mostly Free!)
Chicago comes alive in the spring, and the best way to enjoy it is by stepping outside (the allergies are worth it). Here are some of my favorite things to do when flowers begin to bloom:
- Lincoln Park – If you didn’t know, there is a literal park in Lincoln Park and it’s quite beautiful. Take a zen walk, have a picnic with friends or just enjoy the lakefront vibes. It’s only a few minutes away from DePaul’s Lincoln Park campus.
- Lake Shore Drive Path – Perfect for biking, running, or just strolling along the water.
- Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool – A hidden gem near Lincoln Park Zoo, offering a peaceful retreat from city life. It has been closed since 2022 for restoration but it is slated to reopen in 2025 so you’re in luck!
- The 606 – This elevated trail is a great way to explore the city while getting in some steps. This runs along the entire length of the blue line and is perfect way to get from neighborhood to neighborhood without fear of biking between traffic.

Explore The Conservatory
The Lincoln Park Conservatory is the perfect oasis for Spring. As the weather changes, there are days where Chicago is a bit grey and you’re yearning for some sunshine. The greenhouse environment feels like a tropical retreat, with many exotic and native plants to admire. My favorite is sitting on the bench by the massive monsteras. Free and open year-round, this indoor oasis showcases lush greenery and exotic plants from around the world. Bonus: It’s a perfect Instagram spot!

Events Around Lincoln Park
Spring in Chicago means tons of events popping up—many of them free or student-budget-friendly. Keep an eye out for:
Farmers Markets – Grab fresh produce and local goods at Green City Market in Lincoln Park, which opened on April 5th! They have vintage clothing vendors, homebaked goods, tasty treats and other local products.
Street Festivals & Art Shows – Keep an eye out for pop-up art exhibits and festivals like “May Fest” in Lincoln Park that is happening on May 12th,13th and 14th on Armitage from Sheffield to Racine! This is a family friendly festival that’s perfect for getting to know the Lincoln Park neighborhood and neighbors that accompany you on your DePaul journey!

Spring in Chicago is short but sweet (just like Fall)—so make the most of it! It’s often the best weather to be outdoors with no blistering heat or sub-zero weather (why does the wind hurt?).
