Chicago Events: One of a Kind Show

Two women smiling inside in front of a light up sign spelling out "one of a kind." The wall behind is a light blue, and there are fake plants in the background.
The One of a Kind Show is one of the biggest art shows around. With over 600 vendors there is something for everyone. There was gourmet food, fashion, jewelry, and artwork and the best part is that people come from all over to sell in this show. And as they always have one around the holidays, it makes a perfect one stop shop for gifts. Fortunately you don’t have to wait until next year to attend, because they also have a spring show! And It all happens in the heart of Chicago, at the Merchandise Mart, which is only a hop on the Brown Line or a step from the Metra Stations.
My Mom and I went, as craft fairs, shows and markets are our jam. Let me tell you, it did not disappoint. We had a great time and were in awe of all the amazing vendors. From people making art out of recycled cans to ceramic poetry that was hand painted. We definitely also enjoyed the gourmet food section, with all the free samples. And the fashion/jewelry section had so many different hand-crafted pieces. While the show is huge and you definitely should use the map, there is plenty to do to rest your feet in between sections. There are multiple snack pit stops and a whole seating area that includes a stage with live musicians. We made a whole morning of it!
The photo consists of a collage of different art pieces. In the left corner is 2 paintings of colorful flowers. In the bottom left is a banner with the words “gourmet peanut butter” and then a table full of peanut butter. The bottom right is different mugs in bright colors and fruit. The left upper corner is a dog cutout with brown spots.
Lots of colorful little ceramic planters with green succulents peaking out. All are hanging against a white wall.
Everyone is friendly too! The vendors are so passionate about their goods and are so willing to share their process and behind the scenes. After talking to some of them, I could see that this show is one they are super excited for. With people coming from all over the world, it is definitely a great way to meet many artists and creative people from around the world. I definitely made sure to grab business cards and now follow many on social media so I can keep up with them.
I wouldn’t have found out about this show, if it wasn’t for a DePaul connection. One of my mentors from DePaul knows that I have a stationery business on the side and suggested I go and get a feel for it. It was such an amazing show and I am looking into maybe even becoming a vendor in the next year or so. I definitely think everyone should go at least once, as you will find something to amaze you and you can feel good about supporting small businesses. It’s a win-win.
