Tips for Overcoming Networking Stress
Networking can be nerve-wracking but is such an important skill to develop in college. It’s how you can meet new contacts, future employers, and even friends. I know I am always a little nervous before a networking event. But I do have a couple tips that I found have helped ease anxiety while networking.
1. Try out different types of networking
The first thing is that networking can look like so many different things, from career fairs, networking nights and even talking to a guest speaker after class. At DePaul there is almost always a networking event going on. Departments, clubs and even classes host different focused networking events. These are all networking. So I suggest trying out different events and seeing what makes you most comfortable.
2. Smile
The biggest thing is to smile! A smile goes a long way and looking inviting is a big first step when trying to talk to someone. I also found that when I smile I really do feel happier and it makes you sound friendlier.
3. Bring a friend
If you can, bring a friend. Having someone at your side is a great way not to be so lonely. Along the same line if you recognize someone stop by and say hi! Seeing a familiar face is nice for you and them.
4. Have a way to connect
While not every event calls for a resume, having something people can take with them or scan is a great way to keep up the connection. It also is a good way to end a conversation. Pulling out a QR code that leads to a LinkedIn is a nice touch. And then you don’t have to worry about remembering names or spelling.
5. Practice
Practice does make perfect, or at least more comfortable. I try to go to one event a month. Driehaus students have to take a business communications class and the whole focus is communicating. A huge portion is on how to network and the homework was we had to go out and do it. The more I network, the less stressed I am when doing it.
There is no one way to network and as long as you try, that is what counts. The more I go to these events and talk to people the less scary they seem. I have also met some amazing people, You might even meet your next mentor!
