All about the Coleman Entrepreneur Center
My all time favorite place on campus is the Coleman Entrepreneur Center, better known as the CEC. I know I’m an entrepreneurship major, so no one is shocked that it’s my favorite place on campus, but there is so much to like about it. It truly has become such a huge part of my life. They have so much to offer from supporting your wildest business ideas to just a chill place to hang out. The best part is they are there for everyone, no matter your major.
1. Quite space to work
As I mentioned above, it is a great place to work. It’s fairly quiet, usually has some sweet jams playing in the background and has plenty of space to spread out. It’s a lot more peaceful than the Loop library, which during midterms and finals is packed.
2. Internships
Another great aspect of the CEC is their internship program. My last 2 internships came from the CEC! They work so hard to pair you with a start-up that aligns with what you want to learn. It’s open to any major as they place you where you best fit. Through my internship I have gotten so much hands-on learning of what it takes to run your own business.
3. DePaul CEO
Now I might be a little biased as the President of DePaul’s CEO club (aka the entrepreneurship club), but I honestly think it is one of the cooler clubs. We work closely with the CEC to put on events and meetings that inspire students. From hackathon events, pitch competitions, and entrepreneurial speakers, the club is so much fun.
4. Student Innovation Expo
A big event the CEC holds each year is the Student Innovation Expo. Interested students only need to have a business idea. Then in expo style, each student gets a table, a flyer and anything else they want to bring. I loved participating in this event. The feedback I received for my business idea was so valuable. On top of it everyone was so encouraging and you do get a nice little $1000 scholarship.
5. Purpose Pitch
The last event that is a must go to either as a participant or spectator is the Purpose Pitch. Now I have not only gotten to be an audience member, but also had a chance to pitch. It’s great because it is not only students, but alumni and community members too. You get to network with many people. And I definitely got a lot of experience pitching my business in front of an actual crowd.
I mean it’s easy to see why I love the CEC. Everyone is great, from the staff to the students. They have a lot more fun things to offer than just what I listed above. I suggest going and just sitting and working and you never know who you will meet!
