The Illinois Association for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, & Transgender Issues in Counseling in collaboration with ISCA Presents: Strengthen Advocacy Relationships that Support LGBTQ+ Youth

This Webinar will highlight purposeful ways school counselors, school-based mental health professionals, and community stakeholders can collaborate and align social capital efforts to address the unique needs of LGBTQ+ youth in Illinois Schools. Dr. Matthew Beck will draw upon the school counselor-principal relationship as an intentional tool to bolster LGBTQ+ youth advocacy. This session will be interactive and reflexive as you learn how to start and/or strengthen your relationship-building skills that support LGBTQ+ students.

Webinar Targets:

  • Highlight the unique needs of LGBTQ+ youth in Illinois schools.
  • Learn how to engage in courageous and collaborative conversations with school stakeholders on the needs of LGBTQ+ students.

Dear Counseling Master’s Students,

My name is Byeolbee Um and I am a doctoral student in the Counselor Education and Supervision program at the University of Iowa. I am currently collecting data for the study about counseling trainees’ social justice advocacy development. I have obtained IRB approval from the University of Iowa.

In order to participate in this study, you must meet the following criteria:
(a) a master’s student
(b) currently enrolled in a CACREP-accredited counseling program in the United States

Participants will be asked to take a survey, which will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. A $10 Amazon gift card will be given to 30 participants who agree to enter the raffle. E-mail addresses will be collected and separately managed for compensation and/or contact for the second-round survey. Your participation is completely voluntary.

Research Opportunity: Black Counselor Trainee Microaggressive Experiences

Counselor Candidates,

Dr. Claudia Calder-Marshall and Albrina Burger are seeking 10 to 15 participants for their qualitative study titled Black Counselor Trainees Racial Microaggression Experiences and Perspective on Professional Identity Development. The purpose of this study is to examine and seek an understanding of the relationship between racial microaggression experiences and its impact on the professional identity development of Black Masters-level counselor trainees. The research study has been submitted, reviewed, and approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB # 1846690-1) at Albany State University.

The qualifications to participate in this study include:

  1. Self-identify as Black
  2. Experienced racial microaggression and
  3. Have been a masters-level counselor trainee in a CACREP accredited program for at least three full semesters.

If you would like to participate, we ask you to complete a demographic eligibility survey: Eligibility Survey and participate in one 45-60 minutes semi-structured interview. Once we determine eligibility, participants will be given informed consent documents to review before the qualitative interview. You may withdraw from the study at any time.
