American Counseling Association Elects Christine Suniti Bhat as 73rd President

Dr. Bhat Will Serve as President-Elect Beginning July 1

Alexandria, Va. (February 9, 2023) – Christine Suniti Bhat, PhD, professor and chair of the Department of Counseling & Higher Education at Ohio University, will begin her term as president-elect on July 1 and then serve as 73rd president of the American Counseling Association beginning July 1, 2024.

A first-generation South Asian immigrant to the United States, Dr. Bhat was born and raised in Bengaluru, India. She brings a wealth of experience from various environments in India and Australia, including experience in the Australian military, counseling agencies, and educational institutions. She is a licensed professional counselor and a licensed school counselor in Ohio.

Dr. Bhat previously served as president of the Ohio Counseling Association (OCA) and the Association for Specialists in Group Work (ASGW). She currently serves on the ACA Governing Council representing ASGW, and was previously the Treasurer of Chi Sigma Iota, Counseling Academic and Professional Honor Society. Prior to joining Ohio University, Dr. Bhat was a tenure-track professor at California State University in Long Beach, California.

For close to 20 years, Dr. Bhat has solidified her research, engagement, and outreach interest in the areas of group counseling, school counseling, cyberbullying prevention, and positive and strengths-based counseling interventions. Her publication record is diverse and includes recent research in the Journal of Addictions & Offender Counseling, The Journal for Specialists in Group Work, and the Journal of Counselor Leadership & Advocacy.

Her invited and peer-reviewed presentations include domestic and international conferences in China, India, Taiwan and Turkey. She has been the recipient of several awards, including the ASGW Group Work Practice Award, the OCA Dave Brooks Award, the Deanna Hawes Outstanding Mentor Award of the North Central Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, and the Distinguished Graduate Teaching and Outreach Awards of Ohio University.

CLASS TITLE: Guidance Counselor Assistant

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS: Under the supervision of a school counselor, works with students to provide information concerning careers, continuing education, and postsecondary education financial aid; and performs related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Disseminates information to students, including pamphlets, books, and audio-visual aids for the purpose of stimulating interest and discussion concerning careers, vocations, and continuing education; provides assistance to students in locating specific information and literature regarding careers, occupational training programs, colleges, universities, and trade schools; assists students in the completion of various applications and educational financial aid forms; assists students in completing individualized tasks assigned by a school counselor; assists school counselors in establishing and maintaining student records; compiles, records, and updates routine reports as necessary; locates and acquires career and postsecondary education materials and assembles information packets for teachers for classroom use; maintains inventories of books and pamphlets and replenishes materials as necessary; responds to telephone inquiries concerning general guidance counseling activities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Training and Experience. Graduation from high school (or G.E.D. equivalent). Previous office and clerical experience in a counseling or school related setting is highly desirable.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skill. Basic knowledge of the principles and practices of guidance counseling, knowledge of occupational and educational guidance resources, general knowledge of Chicago Public Schools rules and regulations.

Ability to work with and for school-aged children and school personnel, ability to follow written and verbal instructions, ability to establish and maintain routine records and reports.

Good oral and written communication skills, skill in the application of basic guidance counseling techniques, skill in the operation of basic office equipment, skill in demonstrating sensitivity to the career and educational goals of students.

Physical Requirements.Sedentary Work: Exerting up to ten (10) pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time. A position is classified as Sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.

National School Counseling Week 2023, “School Counselors: Helping Students Dream Big,” sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), will be celebrated from Feb. 6–10, 2023, to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems and how students are different as a result of what school counselors do. National School Counseling Week highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career.

Duties

RTHS will have a school counselor opening for the 2023-2024 school Year. Some responsibilities include working with students on their post-secondary plans, student scheduling, scholarships, college applications, state testing, and all other duties assigned by the building principal. The counselor will support students with their post-high school career and social-emotional learning needs. RTHS is a high school of approximately 850 students with four guidance counselors.

 

Qualifications

Illinois Professional Educator Licensure and master’s degree in School Counselor. Someone who is Bilingual in Spanish is highly sought after.

 

Salary/Benefits

Competitive Salary (base salary for 23-24 at step 1 for Masters $48,789, Step 10 -$67,189), full paid TRS, full single health insurance and dental, and $20,000 Term Life Insurance. Counselors also work approximately additional 15 days in the summer for additional pay. There will also be additional stipends available for extracurriculars.

The Highlights:

 

The Culture and Evidence-Based Practice lab is seeking a part-time research assistant for a program that teaches coping skills to combat adolescent depression in school settings. The goal of the project is to train providers and evaluate the program’s effectiveness with low income, predominantly Latino and African American youth.

 

What You’ll Do:

  • Conducts interviews of research participants, which includes diagnostic assessments of adolescents.
  • Supports therapists delivering the intervention.
  • Recruits and schedules participants.
  • Data entry and dataset management.
  • Helps prepare materials for interviews and therapy sessions.

What You’ll Need:

  • B.A./B.S. or M.A./M.S. in Psychology or related field.
  • Interest in research and in working with children and adolescents, including those with mental health problems.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented.
  • Ability to work well with others and efficiently manage multiple demands.
  • Flexibility in schedule, including some afternoon and early evenings.
  • Travel to several school sites required.
