Hello!
We are researchers from Palo Alto University and seek participants for our study titled Exploring Counselors-in-training’s Clinical Preparedness to Work with Non-Suicidal Self-Injurious and Suicidal Clients. The research study has been submitted, reviewed, and found exempt by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at Palo Alto University (Study 2022-085).
This study aims to understand what counselors-in-training (CITs) have found most and least helpful in their pre-licensure training to prepare them for structured assessment, intervention, treatment, and referral of Non-suicidal self-injurious (NSSI) and suicidal clients. Using a grounded theory methodology, the research team aims to use the research found to support students and new professionals in their clinical practice with NSSI and suicidal clients.
To gather data and complete this study, we ask participants to complete an online demographic questionnaire and a 60-minute interview through Zoom Meeting. We will invite participants with a range of identities until we are confident in the pattern of results that come from the interviews. Not everyone who completes the demographic questionnaire will be invited to participate in an interview.
Please consider participating in this study if you are:
1. Are either
(a) A current masters-level counseling student in a CACREP or CACREP-equivalent program completing your practicum or internship OR
(b) A new professional within one year of graduation from a CACREP or CACREP-equivalent counseling program;
2. Have a caseload where at least 5% of clients are non-suicidal self-injurious or are experiencing suicidal ideations;
3. Are under the supervision of a licensed counselor in your state of practice.
You may withdraw from the study at any time. We will ask for your name or a pseudonym (to use during the interview) and your email address (for scheduling and sending compensation). You might also mention identifying information during the interview (e.g., your place of employment). Your name and email address will be kept in a password-protected folder in our Palo Alto University Google Drive System. Any identifying information you mention in the interview will be deleted from the transcription. Choosing not to be in this study or changing your mind will not affect your relationship with Palo Alto University or any study team members in any way. Additionally, it will not impact your relationship with any faculty involved in this study or with PAU. Being in the study will not positively or negatively affect your academic standing or relationships with study team members. The benefits of completing this study include contributing to a body of research to support CACREP and CACREP-equivalent training programs and supervisors.
All participants who complete the interview will be compensated with a $15 Amazon gift card. If you complete a check of the transcript of your interview within five days of receiving it, you will receive an additional $5 in gift card value.
If you are interested in participating in this study or have any questions, please complete the linked informed consent, and demographics questionnaire found here: https://paloaltou.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_87l4qzi7Fc5GKtU
