Older Americans with Medicare Can Access Counselors Beginning January 1, 2024

Please see below for a statement from the ACA regarding older Americans with Medicare and their access to counselors:

“The American Counseling Association is proud of the work we have done along with our partners to bring access to Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselors (LPMHC) to our nation’s older Americans and those that are disabled and utilize Medicare.

Now that President Biden, who was supportive of this bill throughout 2022, has signed the bill into law, the focus is on successful implementation of the program. This law will allow over 200,000 mental health professionals to enroll as Medicare providers. For clients, this means continuity of care once they reach the age of 65, as well as additional options for providers that suit their needs. The current trend across the nation is that an increased amount of mental health professionals that are not LPMHCs are no longer accepting Medicare. With counselors being able to be providers, we expect a minimum of 115,000 to enroll in the program; increasing access to care from sea to shining sea.

This is an exciting time! Counselors, as well as clients of counselors, can count on ACA to keep them informed, over the next year, on how to prepare to accept Medicare in January of 2024. Please view ACA’s FAQ document, and if you have any additional questions, reach out to us at advocacy@counseling.org.”

3 Year Fellowship Opportunity Working with Couples- The Relationship Therapy Center

The Relationship Therapy Center (RTC) has an upcoming 2023 Fellowship for Post-grads. We’ve hosted these Fellowships for the past 6 years and have experienced them to be invaluable for new therapists who wish to become exceptional at working with couples. Our goal is to help train the next generation of exceptional couples therapists.

While we are located in St. Louis Park, MN, we are expanding our search for Fellows nationally in order to identify the most passionate candidates. We are also looking to increase our diversity –  a top priority for us at RTC. Our current Fellows have come from all over the country seeking this unique opportunity to receive the highest level of training, combined with the rare ability to earn a full-time wage for their hard work!

Only 12 therapists will be chosen for this 3-year Fellowship. The Fellowship is typically a paid Post-Grad position in which small cohorts learn to become skilled couples therapists. The Fellowship includes all of the training, supervision, and support therapists need to become licensed and reach the goal of becoming an exceptional couples therapist. A few exceptional practicum students will also be chosen for this opportunity. Practicum students will start their Fellowship with us in a paid full-time practicum followed by a post-grad experience. You can watch interviews about past fellows’ experiences in this video.  You can also visit  https://mncouplescounseling.com/fellowship for a more in-depth explanation of all components of the program.

After the Fellowship, fellows usually stay on at RTC, where we help them specialize in an area of their interest. We have a vibrant community at RTC. Many therapists find this to be a great place to work for many years with lots of opportunities for advancement.

We are looking for therapists who are: passionate about working with couples (no experience necessary), good community members, are able and interested in working full-time and are available when couples can come to therapy (weekends and evenings).

Attached is a video about the Fellowship, as well as a flyer with more information for potential applicants. The application deadline for our 1st round of interviews is January 30th, 2023Interested applicants are encouraged to check out our application process here. It does require a video application, as well as a resume and letters of recommendation, as it is a highly selective process.
