May is Mental Health Awareness Month #BeKindtoYourMind

During the month of May, the American Counseling Association (ACA) joins the national movement to raise awareness about mental health. Established in 1949, Mental Health Month sought to put a spotlight on the importance of mental health and wellness. Each year we continue to fight against the stigma associated with mental health, provide support for those with mental illness and the counselors supporting them, as well as advocate for policies on behalf of those with mental illness and their loved ones.

This year, our slogan for Mental Health Month is #BeKindtoYourMind. We encourage you to join us as we highlight the significance of mental health awareness and how counselors are able to help!

Thank you so much for being a part of the ACA community and for everything you do to help support the health and well-being of your fellow community members.

Invitation to Participate in Research

Greetings,

Are you a graduate student in a mental health-related graduate program (psychology, counseling, social work, etc.)?

If so, we invite you to participate in a research study that explores how your experiences with your program are related to mindfulness, burnout, and professional factors. Just to note, you do not need experience with mindfulness meditation to participate in this study.

The survey should take approximately 10-12 minutes to complete. Your participation in this study is voluntary, you are free to withdraw from the study at any time, or you may choose not to answer any specific questions. You will have from 5/9/22 to 5/16/22 to complete the survey after which the link to participate will no longer be active.

Responses are completely confidential to the extent provided by law. Only aggregated data are used without any identification of individual responses. Data are stored on a secure website in anonymous form. The participant’s name will not be recorded on any survey materials. No links between participant information and participant responses will be recorded or maintained (i.e., no IP addresses are maintained). Participant names will not be used in any report, participant e-mail address will never be traced, and data will be safely stored on a secured website and in a locked filing cabinet.

This study is sponsored by the University of Utah Department of Educational Psychology and has been approved by the University of Utah Institutional Review Board with IRB number 00149678.

Internship Opportunities for 1st year students

The Josselyn Center also offers internships for 1st and 2nd year students that offer exposure to the mental health field and allow them to begin to support efforts to respond to clients, without doing direct clinical counseling. For example, there are opportunities within the intake office, psych services, and outreach programs like Mental Health First Aid for youth serving organizations and schools. The following are examples of potential opportunities:

    • Responsible for contacting and scheduling clients/youth serving organizations,
    • Scheduling clients for intakes and assisting with resources and referrals
    • Answering potential client questions over the phone
    • Weekly supervision
    • Participating in staff meetings
    • Exposure to a full range of mental health services
    • Primarily working with diverse clients on MEDICAID

Please reach out to Tom Tharayil ( ttharayil@josselyn.org) and send him a cover letter and resume.
