The ASCA Ethical Standards for School Counselors specifies the obligation to the principles of ethical behavior necessary to maintain the high standards of integrity, leadership, and professionalism. The 2022 standards were updated to clarify the norms, values, and beliefs of the profession. Learn about the key updates to the standards, how these impact your work, and how to use the standards to advocate for your roles and responsibilities.
Participants will earn 1 hour of Professional Development Credit.
Objectives:
- Highlight the most substantial changes to the 2022 ASCA Ethical Standards for School Counselors
- Explain how these updates might impact your work as a school counselors
- Highlight ways to inform staff, administration, and parents of your ethical responsibilities.
Dr. Haley Wikoff is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Counselor Education and College Student Personnel at Western Illinois University. Prior to joining the faculty at WIU, Dr. Wikoff worked as an elementary and middle school counselor for 14 years. . She is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) in the State of Illinois, a National Certified Counselor (NCC) and holds licensure as a teacher and professional school counselor in the state of Iowa. Dr. Wikoff’s research interests are largely formed from her experiences as a school counselor including the ethical decision making of school counselors, school counselor advocacy for LGBTQ youth, and creating inclusive, and welcoming school environments for LGBTQ families. She has published and presented at the state, regional, and national level on these topics. Recently Dr. Wikoff was named as the co-chair of the ASCA Ethics Committee and she looks forward to working with school counselors across the U.S. on ethical decision making.
