School Counselors and PE Collaboration

This past week, Dr. Melissa Ockerman, along with 5 school counseling internship students, Erika Castillo, Kelly Cochrane, Eman Olaimi, E.V. Lauterbach and Jesus Galvan, presented to Dr. Ani Frank’s PE 372 undergraduate class about social emotional wellness and trauma-informed teaching strategies (special thanks to students, Kat Freeman & Leslie Franco for their contributions as well). Big kudos to the team for the interactive and well-received presentation. We are hopeful it’s the beginning of ongoing professional collaboration between PE teachers and school counselors! Graduate Assistant Opportunity for 1st or 2nd year CSL students

General Summary: 

The College of Education, Education and Counseling Center “ECC” is seeking a Graduate Assistant for spring quarter. The ECC provides tutoring, counseling, and reading intervention programs serving students in the Chicago area.  The Graduate Assistant interfaces with the College of Education faculty, graduate students, and DePaul undergraduate students who provide the services, and students and families receiving services.

The Graduate Assistant will work under the direction of the Senior Program Manager of the ECC.

Principle Duties, Responsibilities, and Other Job-Related Information:

  • Program management, including running a Saturday program for youth, recruiting additional youth, and designing a summer program.  Promoting the program to local schools, making presentations, and interfacing with parents and youth to manage all aspects of the recruiting process.
  • Working with the Office of Compliance to ensure all programs in the ECC remain in compliance.
  • Front Desk coverage and overseeing the general operating tasks to run the ECC.
  • Collaborating with other GA’s and ECC staff to complete ECC projects as needed.

Position Requirements (Minimum knowledge, skills, and abilities required):

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, are required. Attention to detail and the ability to work independently with limited supervision after initial instructions are critical to the role, as is a patient, positive and professional demeanor appropriate to an office environment.
  • Excellent program management and proven track record of working successfully with youth.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to handle confidential information and exercise discretion

Position Qualifications (Minimum level of education and/or experience needed to be successful in the position):

  • Experience working with the public, particularly with youth.

Hour requirements/schedule:

  • Typical schedule:  20 hours per week for 200 hours spring quarter.

Job opening for current students: Success Coach

DePaul Student Affairs seeks students to serve as peer coaches for sophomore and some junior students during the 2021-2022 academic year. During the 2021-2022 academic year, the position is intended to be located at the Loop Campus and Lincoln Park campus, with the potential of remote work rarely as needed.  Success Coaches will check-in regularly to address obstacles, promote resources, provide encouragement, and offer structured accountability. This position is intended to increase the retention of sophomore students through personalized goal setting, guidance, personal strategy development, and engagement. Coaches are paid on an hourly basis at a rate of $15/hour.

Principle Duties, Responsibilities, and Other Job Related Information: 

  • Provide basic peer coaching focusing on problem solving techniques, goal setting, encouragement, and follow-up with assigned students.
  • Meet one-on-one with assigned students throughout each quarter either in-person or remotely.
  • Initiate communication with assigned students at least four times per quarter via email, phone, and/or texting to promote resources and services.
  • Serve on a specialty team to focus duties. Specialty team roles include:
  1. Outreach – primarily responsible for texting, phone calls, and emails to get students to appointments with coaches; may maintain virtual “coaching” relationship with students.
  2. General Coaching – coaches on this team focus on overall goal setting, problem-solving, and accountability.
  3. Time Management – coaches on this team focus on productivity and time management skills.
  4. Academic Skills – coaches on this team focus on learning styles and academic skills.
  5. Strengths – coaches on this team focus on assessment of student’s strengths.
  • Attend 2-3 departmental/university live or virtual events and/or quarterly activities with mentees including such things as networking events, lectures, student or professional organization meetings, job fairs, branding days, etc.
  • Participate in Sophomore Success Coaching team staff meetings bi-weekly.
  • Track and compile quarterly activity report.

Position Requirements (minimum knowledge, skills, and abilities required):

  • Knowledge of sophomore student experience/ Coach should be a rising junior or senior (graduate students acceptable)
  • Completed at least two quarters at DePaul with a minimum 2.75 cumulative grade point average.
  • Strong interpersonal skills including empathy, communication, problem solving, and leadership skills and the willingness to develop these skills further.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the mission of DePaul University
  • High level of time-management skills and flexibility, and ability to motivate self and others
  • Knowledge of DePaul student resources.
  • Comfortable with difficult and confidential conversations.
  • Office/virtual hours to be scheduled Monday-Friday between 9am and 5pm; specific times to be arranged with supervisor.

Hour Requirements and Schedule:

  • Minimum of 10 hours per week and up to 20 hours possible
  • Attend enrichment activities and periodic coaching training

ACES Statement in response to anti-BIPOC and LGBTGEQ+ legislation

ACES Statement

 Drafted by the ACES Human Rights and Social Justice Committee under the leadership of Dr. Harvey Peters.

We, the community of professional counselors, counselor educators, and supervisors, must be aware and active in influencing the evolving social, cultural, and political landscape that counters our professional commitment to anti-oppression and anti-racism and harms the communities counselors seek to serve. Within the last two weeks, a new series of bills, bans, and declarations (i.e., bans and restrictions on Critical Race Theory [CRT], the “don’t say gay” bill, and the declaration of pediatric gender-affirming treatment as child abuse) have gained visibility and traction. CRT focuses on addressing racism, white supremacy, and white hegemony through social, structural, and legal systems. These bills and bans target Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Gender Expansive, and Queer/Questioning (LGBTGEQ+) communities, and those who live at the intersections of these communities. These bills and bans are not new. They devalue, decenter, and dehumanize BIPOC and LGBTGEQ+ communities, while attacking their safety, liberation, wellness, and education. Accordingly, professional counselors and counselor educators must act against the harmful impact of these bills on the BIPOC and LGBTGEQ+ communities. Our ethical imperative is to advocate for social justice across the domains of client/student empowerment, client/student advocacy, community collaboration, systems advocacy, collective action, and social/political advocacy.

These political acts of aggression, which are occurring across multiple k-12 and higher education systemic levels, actively limit how race, racism, bias, oppression, identity, and related truths are discussed and taught. These political acts of aggression intend to silence, erase, and suppress BIPOC and LGBTGEQ+ history and experiences within classrooms and, ultimately, the United States. In their intent and effect, these bans are antithetical to our professional imperative to counter oppression in all forms, including the bans’ foci of racism, homophobia, genderism, and their intersections. To meet our imperative roles and responsibilities, professional counselors, counselor educators, and supervisors must seek information on current and historic anti-BIPOC and anti-LGBTGEQ+ legislation and rhetoric. We must be clear about the roles counselors have in disrupting political aggression and harm against these communities. The collective professional action of professional counselors and counselor educators should act to center and protect the biopsychosocial safety, liberation, wellness, and resilience of BIPOC and LGBTGEQ+ communities. Such actions require the inclusion and protection of BIPOC and LGBTGEQ+ knowledge.

Once again, ACES calls on its members to act. Prioritize your personal and professional development related to current and historic anti-BIPOC and anti-LGBTGEQ+ rhetoric and legislation. Continue to recenter your commitment to anti-oppression and anti-racism across counseling practice, teaching, service, and advocacy. Social justice advocacy will serve a vital role for counselor educators and supervisors in addressing these bans, bills, and decelerations’ impact on our anti-oppressive and anti-racist teaching and supervision. Such issues include teaching multicultural and social justice content consistent with our ethical, professional, and accreditation standards and serving as gatekeepers to the profession and the profession’s values. Moreover, these political acts of aggression limit our ability to support developing counselors in providing life-saving, anti-racist and anti-oppressive, and liberatory counseling services with students, clients, and community members, thereby furthering an environment of oppression and harm. Last, these political acts of aggression suppress our academic freedom and responsibilities to teach courses, conduct research, and facilitate necessary and long overdue conversations around racism, homophobia, genderism, and all forms of violence and structural oppression. Below, members can find resources that can support the continued learning and action strategies to better serve and advocate with and on behalf of BIPOC and LGBTGEQ+ persons and communities. With that, we encourage ACES members to engage with the materials and develop additional acts of disruptions across the domains of counseling practice, teaching, service, and advocacy.
