DePaul Student Affairs seeks students to serve as peer coaches for sophomore and some junior students during the 2021-2022 academic year. During the 2021-2022 academic year, the position is intended to be located at the Loop Campus and Lincoln Park campus, with the potential of remote work rarely as needed. Success Coaches will check-in regularly to address obstacles, promote resources, provide encouragement, and offer structured accountability. This position is intended to increase the retention of sophomore students through personalized goal setting, guidance, personal strategy development, and engagement. Coaches are paid on an hourly basis at a rate of $15/hour.
Principle Duties, Responsibilities, and Other Job Related Information:
- Provide basic peer coaching focusing on problem solving techniques, goal setting, encouragement, and follow-up with assigned students.
- Meet one-on-one with assigned students throughout each quarter either in-person or remotely.
- Initiate communication with assigned students at least four times per quarter via email, phone, and/or texting to promote resources and services.
- Serve on a specialty team to focus duties. Specialty team roles include:
- Outreach – primarily responsible for texting, phone calls, and emails to get students to appointments with coaches; may maintain virtual “coaching” relationship with students.
- General Coaching – coaches on this team focus on overall goal setting, problem-solving, and accountability.
- Time Management – coaches on this team focus on productivity and time management skills.
- Academic Skills – coaches on this team focus on learning styles and academic skills.
- Strengths – coaches on this team focus on assessment of student’s strengths.
- Attend 2-3 departmental/university live or virtual events and/or quarterly activities with mentees including such things as networking events, lectures, student or professional organization meetings, job fairs, branding days, etc.
- Participate in Sophomore Success Coaching team staff meetings bi-weekly.
- Track and compile quarterly activity report.
Position Requirements (minimum knowledge, skills, and abilities required):
- Knowledge of sophomore student experience/ Coach should be a rising junior or senior (graduate students acceptable)
- Completed at least two quarters at DePaul with a minimum 2.75 cumulative grade point average.
- Strong interpersonal skills including empathy, communication, problem solving, and leadership skills and the willingness to develop these skills further.
- Knowledge of and commitment to the mission of DePaul University
- High level of time-management skills and flexibility, and ability to motivate self and others
- Knowledge of DePaul student resources.
- Comfortable with difficult and confidential conversations.
- Office/virtual hours to be scheduled Monday-Friday between 9am and 5pm; specific times to be arranged with supervisor.
Hour Requirements and Schedule:
- Minimum of 10 hours per week and up to 20 hours possible
- Attend enrichment activities and periodic coaching training
