Today, Friday April 23 is the GLSEN Day of Silence.
Day of Silence is a national student-led demonstration where LGBTQ+ students and allies around the country take a vow of silence to protest the harmful effects of harassment and discrimination on LGBTQ+ people in schools.
This moment in time is a poignant reminder of why we observe Day of Silence. Across the country, a myriad of anti-transgender bills are being considered in state legislatures. According to the Human Rights Campaign, 117 anti-trans bills have been introduced, 65 of which target trans youth.
We can support our communities with intentional silence today andaction.
PHIMC staff and Alliance Youth Committee members share why they participate in Day of Silence and how they plan to break their silence this year.
Now for the fun part: Night of Noise: We’re Still Connected is an opportunity for us to break the silence together while raising funds to support LGBTQ+ young people.
