A Day in the Life as Intern, Melissa Gastelum

Mar 8, 2023 | A Day in the Life, Internship Projects

Good morning! It is not easy waking up at 7:30 AM on a Friday, but I get dressed, eat my banana and honey toast, and head out for my hour-long train ride to the West Loop. I take the Red Line downtown and transfer to the Pink or Green Line to get to Epiphany Center for the Arts. I usually arrive right on the dot at 10 AM. I wait at the back door of the Church of Epiphany for my supervisor to let me in.

To start the workday, my supervisor and I head to the café/bar and make ourselves lattes with the espresso machine. The espresso machine, along with a myriad of kinds of milk and flavors, is one of the major perks of working in person. While we do our best at being baristas, we talk over my goals for the day. Fridays are when Epiphany sends out reminder emails for the shows we have next week, so I plan on formatting emails and writing out press releases for March.

Sending out emails isn’t terribly difficult, but formatting, writing, and editing can be tedious work. I send out about 4 to 5 emails a day, which makes up most of the time I’m at Epiphany. I make sure links are associated with pictures of the artists within the email and that the presentation is professional. Then, I run it past my supervisor. After my emails look good, I need to figure out the right audience for them. I don’t want to send the same email out to the same people – love-bombing our guests with emails won’t work. I scroll through past artists who have a similar vibe to the current artist I’m writing about and curate the mailing list.

After my email brainstorming, I move on to less pressing work. The press release project is manned by me. We have three recurring genre nights of Jazz, Blues, and Immersive Chamber music at Epiphany. My job is to write up press releases for each and who will be performing during the month of March.

It hits 2pm, and I am free to go about my day and source some food! Thanks for tuning in for a read on my intern day of emails. I’ve included a screenshot of one of my recent emails!
