Interviewing MMA Fighters

Nov 15, 2021 | A Day in the Life

Considering I make my own schedule with Full Mount MMA, my days can be sporadic and inconsistent. With that being said, I spent a little over three hours doing work for my supervisor today without even having any interviews scheduled. I had an interview posted last week, so I spent part of this morning looking back at the analytics of that video and its associated clips. It was with UFC light heavyweight champion Jan Blachowicz, who just fought and lost this past Saturday, so the video spiked in views leading up to his fight. We posted the video about one week before Jan competed this past Saturday, so the views steadily built until then before plateauing around his fight weekend.

This is a screenshot from YouTube’s analytics, as it’s an important resource for us to see what kind of content does well and what topics our subscribers actually care about.

I had a very busy weekend, so I spent this morning catching up on interview requests. I emailed about a dozen managers, some of whom I already have connections with, and others I was contacting for the first time. This took about 90 minutes to do, as I try to make each email a bit personal and not so copy-and-paste, particularly when it comes to managers and athletes that I know a bit better. I got a few quick responses, so I spent some extra time responding to them and trying to lock down times for interviews, or thanking those that declined. I spoke to my supervisor for a quick 15 minutes to keep him in the loop about what content he could be expecting in the next few weeks and put him in touch with a possible sponsor that had contacted me looking for promotional content.

Since I didn’t have an interview scheduled for today, I was able to spend some more time catching up on other work for my supervisor. Typically, if I have an interview, it takes about an hour to set up my recording equipment and prepare questions before conducting the interview itself. But today, I did some work on one of the channels we are partnered with. It is a relatively small podcast channel hosted by another UFC fighter that I had interviewed in the past. I took up the branding and running of his channel as a personal favor, and it has turned in to one of my bigger responsibilities within this internship experience now. I spent almost two hours catching up on uploading podcasting clips for his channel throughout the week, and made thumbnails for other ones that he had already posted. All in all, it was a pretty slow day since I didn’t have any interviews to prepare for or videos of my own to upload, but it was good to have this extra time to catch up on some of the more menial work that I didn’t have time to do last week.
